What About Works?

One of the most common accusations Catholics will hear from anti-Catholic Protestants goes like this: "Catholics aren't saved." Or... "You Catholics believe you earn your way to heaven." "You trust your works - instead of Jesus." "Only faith saves."     Anti-Catholic make these claims so often, in fact, that they assume they're true. It's the fallacy of bandwagon logic..., that is, if enough people tell themselves something long enough, they call it true.And if you're an anti-Catholic reading this, it probably sounds familiar.     But here's the question: have they ever bothered to ask Catholics what Catholics actually say about it – what THEY believe? And if so, do they accept it?     You see, they are outside the Church, either unwittingly, or deliberately.     They've heard many things 2nd or 3rd hand ABOUT Catholicism, for a long time, from enemies and opponents of Catholicism...and there are many of those!     This avalanche of bandwagon thinking leads them to assume that it is true because they hear it a lot from those on their side. That's just how people think.     But, they may have never heard it correctly from Catholics, or they forgot if they did – and they are normally taught to automatically reject whatever Catholics say, anyway.     One of the greatest lies people in this state of mind tell themselves is that they will change their opinion if someone gives them information they deem valid. But they don't change, and they never really intend to....because they come in judging against Catholics.     However, the Bible is crystal clear about salvation: We are saved by God's grace. "For by grace you have been saved through faith... it is the gift of God." — Ephesians 2:8-9 Catholics believe that. Every single Mass. Every Catechism. Every generation. BUT - the very next verse says: "For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works." — Ephesians 2:10     An interesting difference between Catholics and their opponents is that Catholics generally view the Bible holistically. When we see one verse we tend to keep looking around it, before and after, and farther, to grasp the entire context. Going with fragmented, cherry-picked verses to make arguments is not our traditonal method.     In this way, we arrive at the Catholic overview: - Grace saves us. - Grace also changes us. - Faith is not meant to operate on its own.     Even Martin Luther echoed the biblical truth that genuine faith is not an idle concept...and true belief inevitably manifests in a transformed life and active, loving service to others     In the book of James, the author puts it this way: "Faith by itself, if it has no works, is dead." — James 2:17     Catholics don't believe good works replace Jesus. We believe good works are the fruit of belonging to Jesus.          So how should Catholics react when they hear these accusations? When someone says something like, "Catholics only believe in works salvation,”... 1. Pause. 2. Listen. 3. Discern their intent.     That last part is important. Bishop Fulton Sheen used to make it a point to seek the intentions of people - not just follow their words. He knew there was almost always more going on in the backstory.     Odds are they have no real idea what they are saying...it is collective rhetoric they keep repeating. They may pluck a few verses to make their accusation seem valid - at least to them. That's pretty common, too. But, overall, the situation will not feel healing - it will feel antagonistic.      At that point, just relax. Don't leap up, all full of fire. Take 2 or 3 seconds to breathe and dont let them steer your emotions, or the conversation.     Then hold their gaze for a second or two and ask: "Do you believe a Christian should obey Christ?" If the other person is a Christian, they will probably admit they should. Then ask them: "Is obeying Jesus a good work? Even He did good works and said so, and He obeyed His Father. Our Lord also said we should do as He did. So would you agree that obeying Him is a good work?"     Now the conversation changes, one way - or the other. But it cannot stay the same. And in my experience, you are likely to discern their real intent right then and there!     The point is, Catholics are not "earning" salvation.... We're responding to the grace God freely gives. God does the saving – God saves. We cooperate with Him. Just as Scripture teaches us to do.     If they keep insisting Catholics, "earn their way into heaven," just remember they've probably had years of "programming" to think that. Just keep calm and reply: "Catholics believe salvation begins with God's grace, not our efforts. Good works don't earn salvation—they are the evidence of a living faith transformed by Christ." Then ask: "If faith never changes the way someone lives, is that the faith James describes?"     Honest questions deserve honest answers. Dishonest intent also deserves honest answers. These people are our brothers and sisters, after all. They should hear it from us.     But regardless, Catholics know that Scripture gives grace, obedience, and action their proper place.   Let’s clean it up: ❌ Catholics do not believe you can earn heaven solely by doing good things. Even evil people may do that. ❌ Also, Catholics do not believe works replace Jesus...that is an assumption born of malintention and ignorance. ❌ Lastly, Catholics do not teach salvation is earned solely by human effort. ✅ Catholics believe salvation is a free gift of God's grace. ✅ Catholics believe faith should produce a life of obedience, and action, as Jesus Himself, lived and commanded. ✅ Catholics believe Jesus alone is the source of our salvation.
