🛐 Seven Things OSAS (Once Saved, Always Saved) Does Not Teach
The doctrine of Once Saved, Always Saved (OSAS), also known as Eternal Security, is one of the most misunderstood teachings in Christianity. Many criticisms of the doctrine are actually based on ideas that OSAS does not teach. Before discussing what Eternal Security is, it is helpful to understand what it is not.
1. OSAS Is Not a License to Sin
The doctrine does not teach that Christians may live however they please without consequences.
“What shall we say then? Shall we continue in sin, that grace may abound? God forbid…” (Romans 6:1-2 KJV)
God disciplines His children when they stray (Hebrews 12:6-8).
2. OSAS Is Not “Once Prayed, Always Saved”
Repeating a prayer does not save a person. Salvation comes through genuine faith in Jesus Christ.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith…” (Ephesians 2:8-9 KJV)
A profession of faith is not the same as possession of faith.
3. OSAS Is Not Teaching That All Professing Christians Are Saved
The Bible warns that some people claim to know Christ but have never truly trusted Him.
“Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven…” (Matthew 7:21 KJV)
4. OSAS Is Not Saying That Believers Cannot Backslide
Believers can fall into sin and become spiritually cold. David, Peter, and many others did. Yet God’s children remain His children and are subject to His correction.
5. OSAS Is Not Teaching That Works Are Unimportant
Good works do not save, but they should follow salvation.
"For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works…” (Ephesians 2:10 KJV)
Works are the fruit of salvation, not the root of it.
6. OSAS Is Not Denying God’s Chastisement
A believer who persists in sin can expect God’s discipline.
"For whom the Lord loveth he chasteneth…” (Hebrews 12:6 KJV)
Security does not eliminate accountability.
7. OSAS Is Not Easy Believism
Biblical salvation involves genuine faith in Christ. It is not merely agreeing with facts or making a casual profession.
✝️ Conclusion
OSAS teaches that those who have truly trusted Christ are eternally secure because salvation is God’s work, not man’s. The believer is born into God’s family, sealed by the Holy Spirit, and kept by the power of God. Eternal Security is not confidence in our ability to hold on to Christ, but confidence in Christ’s ability to hold on to us.
“And I give unto them eternal life; and they shall never perish, neither shall any man pluck them out of my hand.” (John 10:28 KJV)
